CLEVELAND, January 25, 2023 – Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP is pleased to announce that Intellectual Property attorneys Andrew Alexander and Joshua A. Friedman have been elected partners of the firm.

“We are happy to welcome Andy Alexander and Josh Friedman as the newest partners with Calfee’s Intellectual Property practice group. Both Andy and Josh are tremendous lawyers and key members of our litigation team,” said John S. Cipolla, Firm Vice Chairman and Partner with the firm's Intellectual Property practice group.

Andy Alexander's practice focuses on IP litigation, licensing, and counseling. Having spent four years as a laboratory analyst at a major pharmaceutical company before attending law school, Andy successfully combines his technical and legal experience to help clients navigate complex IP issues. Although Andy has particular expertise in the pharmaceutical, life science, and chemical industries, he has helped clients across a wide range of industries navigate complex IP disputes involving patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets, including in federal district court and on appeal.

As a registered patent attorney, Andy also assists clients in procuring patents, including assessing patentability, drafting and prosecuting patent applications, and representing patent owners in administrative proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Andy was recognized by Ohio Super Lawyers "Ohio Rising Stars" for Intellectual Property (2022 - 2023).

He earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School, his M.A. in Philosophy from Western Michigan University, and his B.S., in Biology and Philosophy from Ashland University.

“Josh and Andy also handle procurement, licensing, and counseling matters for their clients. Their technical abilities in the electrical, software, pharmaceutical, and life science arenas are in high demand by clients and have allowed them to distinguish themselves in the courtroom and patent office,” said Billy C. Raulerson, Co-Chair of Calfee’s Intellectual Property practice group.

Josh Friedman's practice focuses on a wide variety of intellectual property matters, including patent, trademark and copyright prosecution, litigation, licensing, and counseling. He has extensive experience in the electrical, software, mechanical, and medical device arts. Josh also manages large patent and trademark portfolios and assists clients in enforcement. He provides counsel on IP-related transactions, including on compliance with data privacy laws and software licensing including opensource. Josh’s litigation experience includes representing clients in federal and state courts and administrative tribunals (including the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and International Trade Commission) at all stages of litigation, including trials, appeals, and administrative hearings and appeals.

Josh was named to The Best Lawyers in America© "Ones to Watch" list for Litigation – Patent (2022 - 2023) and Litigation – Intellectual Property (2023). He also was recognized by Ohio Super Lawyers "Ohio Rising Stars" for Intellectual Property (2022 - 2023).

Prior to joining Calfee in 2014, Josh served as a judicial extern at the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., where he assisted the judge in appellate arguments and opinions in patent and administrative law cases.

Josh earned his J.D., cum laude, from Case Western Reserve University and his B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from The Ohio State University.
