News Release

CLEVELAND, January 3, 2022 – Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP is pleased to announce the election of Intellectual Property attorney Yizhou (Brad) Liu to Partner.

In addition to serving as a patent attorney, Liu serves as Calfee’s Associate Director of International Business in Asia. He counsels clients around the globe on patent prosecution, design-around assistance, freedom to operate, patentability and validity opinions.

"Brad provides invaluable legal counsel and practical advice to our clients every day and responds to their international needs around the clock.  He does all of this with a friendly, humble demeanor that clients and his colleagues really appreciate – we are very lucky indeed to have Brad on our team,” said John S. Cipolla, Vice Chairman of the firm and Co-Chair of Calfee’s Intellectual Property practice group.

Liu has first-hand experience before both the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the National Intellectual Property Administration of China (CNIPA). He has extensive experience with the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) patent filing and prosecution process, as well as Track One Prioritized Examination under the USPTO.

"As a registered U.S. Patent Attorney and qualified Chinese Patent Attorney, Brad is distinctly able to serve both our U.S. and Chinese clients with regards to their patent needs. Having assisted both U.S. and Chinese companies with cross-border patent issues for over a decade, he has insight and experience that few possess – experience that he routinely uses to solve clients' most sophisticated and complex international patent challenges ,” said Todd Tucker, Calfee’s Director of International Business and Partner with the firm’s Intellectual Property practice group.

Liu is actively involved with intellectual property litigation matters, especially in factual investigation, discovery and claim construction stages. He takes an active role to prepare foreign witnesses for U.S. depositions and trials. Experienced in both U.S. and Chinese legal systems, Liu counsels clients to understand litigation procedures and develop strategies for complex litigation in foreign jurisdictions. He also counsels clients regarding post-grant proceedings under the USPTO.

Beyond his intellectual property practice, Liu provides counseling for the firm's Asian vendor clients, including establishing businesses in the U.S. He works closely with Calfee’s Business Restructuring and Insolvency practice group to protect Asian vendors’ interests and to maximize their recoveries in U.S. bankruptcy proceedings.

Liu has been selected for inclusion to the 2022 Ohio Rising Stars list. Each year, no more than 2.5% of attorneys in the state are selected by the research team at Super Lawyers to receive this honor. Super Lawyers, part of Thomson Reuters, is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement.

Liu is licensed to practice law in Ohio and New York and before the USPTO. He is qualified in National Intellectual Property Administration of the People’s Republic of China, and he is fluent in English and Mandarin/Chinese.

A member of the Cleveland Intellectual Property Law Association, Liu also serves as an Associate with the Kathleen O'Malley American Inn of Court.

Prior to becoming an attorney, Liu worked for several years as a patent specialist for a Chinese intellectual property law firm and as a control engineer for a Chinese energy company. He joined Calfee as a Law Clerk in 2013, and he became a licensed attorney with Calfee in 2015.

Liu earned his B.E., in Measurement Control Technology & Instruments from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2005, his M.B.A. from Ashland University in 2011, and his J.D. from the University of Akron School of Law in 2015.
