Event Sponsor: The Greater Ohio Policy Center and Ohio EPA

On May 6, 2026, Calfee Senior Counsel and Leader of the firm's Environmental Law practice, Christopher Jones, spoke at the Brownfield Conference sponsored by The Greater Ohio Policy Center and Ohio EPA in Columbus, Ohio. The panel discussion, "Managing Ongoing Liabilities – Post Remediation," focused on perspectives from a developer, an attorney, and an environmental consultant on long-term operations and maintenance (O&M) and monitoring obligations post-remediation.

Chris was joined by fellow panelist Matt Montecalvo, Civil and Environmental Manager with DiGeronimo Companies, and panel moderator Lindsay Crow, Real Estate Market Leader with Verdantas. Key learning objectives included:

  • What triggers the need for O&M and monitoring
  • Potential post-remediation activities that could be required
  • Upfront consideration during remedial planning that could minimize long-term obligations
  • Risk Mitigation Plan implementation and reporting
  • Transferable obligations when the property is sold, such as building occupancy limitations and land-use restrictions
  • Duration and potential costs of this often-unanticipated work.
