Overview

Ryan joined Calfee in 2024 after serving as an IP law clerk (2022-2023) and as a summer associate (2021, 2022, and 2023) with the firm’s Intellectual Property practice group. In these roles, he responded to and advised on Office Actions from the USPTO, wrote and assisted in writing patent applications over a variety of technological fields, conducted litigation research for several high-profile IP matters including prior use and copyright law, researched and advised on patent claims for high-level blockchain technology and software, and provided clients with noninfringement analysis opinions.

Prior to law school, Ryan served as an Electrical and Biomedical Research Engineer for Advanced Platform Technology, where he designed and printed a UART to RS232 converter PCB board with opto-coupling technology and dual independent ground isolation for ESD protection. He also wave soldered, built, and assisted in the designing of 50+ UroDevice PCBs to restore continence to paralyzed veterans through electronic stimulation and data processing.

Ryan served as an OPEX Engineering Co-op and COE Electrical Engineering Co-op at Eaton Corporation, where he created and implemented Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programs, which streamlined how design engineers create power machinery with specialty terminals, resulting in a significant decrease in surplus inventory, greater optimization of engineering resources, and elimination of disruptions in manufacturing flow due to terminals. He also created 5S+ training modules, standard work for plant processes, and safety tier boards that were all implemented plant-wide and led to a decrease in reportable safety incidents.

He worked at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company as a Global Electrical Engineering Co-op, where he helped management revise safety procedures for high-voltage electrical equipment, assisted in the installation of multiple human machine interfaces (HMIs) and other hardware devices, and gained hands-on experience with programmable logic controllers used in industrial automation.
