Overview
As an experienced patent attorney, Michael counsels clients on intellectual property strategy and helps clients protect their intellectual property rights. A significant portion of Michael’s practice focuses on complex patent litigation matters, where he helps clients both enforce their patent rights and defend against claims from competitors. He has worked in a variety of technological areas, with a primary focus in the chemical arts.
Prior to joining Calfee in 2025, Michael served as an Associate with a boutique intellectual property law firm. During this time, Michael assisted clients with domestic, international, and foreign patent preparation and prosecution, patentability opinions, freedom to operate opinions, trademark preparation and prosecution, and intellectual property litigation.
He earned his J.D. from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, where he graduated cum laude with a focus on patent law and a certificate in Cybersecurity Law and Policy. While a law student, Michael was a founding member of the Volunteering in Intellectual Property Pro Bono organization, participated in the Intellectual Property Clinic, and competed in the American Intellectual Property Law Association moot court competition.
Prior to attending law school, Michael received his B.S. in Chemistry and a minor in Physics from Indiana University. While a student, Michael worked in a research lab investigating inorganic nanomaterials including semiconductors and porous materials, writing his honors thesis on electrochemical properties of layered double hydroxides.
