Overview

Julie joined Calfee in 2023 with considerable experience as an intellectual property and corporate attorney, previously serving as Counsel for a large electric utility company, American Electric Power (AEP). 

In her role as Counsel, Julie advised stakeholders on the company’s intellectual property matters, managed outside counsel, and provided guidance on other legal matters. She prepared and prosecuted trademark applications and patent applications related to chemical engineering, managed the company’s domestic trademark portfolio, and counseled clients on other IP matters such as trade secrets, infringement matters, and oppositions. She is adept at filing copyright applications.

Julie also has experience conducting IP due diligence and drafting and negotiating IP provisions in mergers and acquisitions and other transactions.

In addition, she has experience developing internal IP policies and procedures to foster legal and contractual compliance in furtherance of the protection of company and third-party IP.

She has advised clients on open-source software licensing and has drafted, reviewed, and negotiated licensing agreements and other contracts, including software and joint development agreements.

Her practice at Calfee encompasses patent preparation and prosecution, with a focus on matters related to chemistry and chemical engineering.

Julie works diligently with business leaders to develop effective IP strategies.

While attending law school, Julie served as an Intellectual Property Law Extern with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and a Legal Intern with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA). And as an undergraduate, she conducted extensive research in chemistry, atmospheric chemistry, and climate modeling.
