Phil previously served as an Associate with Medley, Behrens & Lewis, LLC, where he gained experience drafting patent applications in a range of fields such as quantum computing, autonomous navigation, industrial material handling, radar processing, and telescopic control algorithms. He prosecuted patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and replied to Office Actions. In addition, Phil provided guidance to foreign counsel to respond to Office Actions before the Chinese Patent Office, Japanese Patent Office, and European Patent Office.

Phil also served as a Patent Portfolio Manager for Honeywell Intelligrated, a multinational material handling, automation and software engineering company, where he managed the patent process from start to finish by helping engineering and R&D teams identify valuable IP, managing internal drafting teams and outside counsel in preparing patent applications, and cost effectively managing the existing portfolio. He also managed multiple patent review committees across Honeywell Safety and Productivity Solutions and reviewed patent-to-product matching performed by inhouse IP analysts. Additionally, Phil led numerous forward patenting harvests related to breakthrough initiative technologies, and led innovation sessions related to new product introduction processes.

In addition, Phil performed freedom-to-operate analyses and patent landscape analyses for IP due diligence in connection with potential M&A activity and new product launches, including reviewing patents owned by potential competitors in order to identify possible infringement.

Phil previously worked as an Associate at a boutique IP law firm, where he drafted hundreds of patent applications in a range of fields, such as:

Phil has collaborated with in-house counsel, third-party counsel, and R&D directors to develop foundational intellectual property and strategy associated with a burgeoning technology with potentially disruptive effects on wireless communications, in addition to guiding solo inventors and other small clients through the process of protecting their intellectual property. Phil has developed patent portfolio strategies to maximize income and patent protection for clients’ intellectual property and has managed internal docket review processes to ensure that dates are entered into docketing software correctly. He has worked with inventors and in-house counsel to identify patentable and marketable technologies based on knowledge of technology field and competitors’ products.

Phil previously worked for Shelter For Life International, an international, nongovernmental organization, as a Project Manager in Iraq, where he managed a USAID and UNHCR funded relief and development projects including a $4 million water pipeline and distribution network project that directly benefited more than 175,000 people. He also served as a Program Administrator for the Central Field Office in Tajikistan, where he provided administrative and programming support for ongoing projects.

Phil joined Calfee in 2022.

He earned his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 2010 and his B.S. in Physics from Calvin College in 2004.
