Maura’s recent experience includes:
  • Serving as lead counsel for a financial institution in a multimillion-dollar Ohio class action, where she obtained a ruling limiting the scope of the class and successfully defended that ruling on appeal, and negotiated and implemented a favorable class settlement;
  • Successfully representing the U.S. subsidiary of a multi-national manufacturer in an international arbitration before the International Chamber of Commerce in Geneva, Switzerland, on contract claims valued over $50 million arising from the dissolution of a longstanding joint venture;
  • Serving as lead counsel and obtaining summary judgment on behalf of police officers and municipalities in two actions in United States District Court alleging constitutional claims for excessive force and unlawful entry arising from the execution of high-risk search warrants;

  • Acting as lead counsel and successfully defending a financial services client in an action for accountant malpractice;
  • Serving as lead counsel and successfully defending a national financial institution on claims of negligence arising in connection with embezzlement by a depositor.
 Maura’s work in the area of antitrust and trade regulation has included both litigation and client counseling on the Sherman Act and Robinson-Patman Act, as well as state dealer protection statutes.  Maura regularly advises clients with respect to the antitrust risks associated with minimum resale or advertised pricing programs.  She has also advised clients regarding the antitrust implications of potential mergers or acquisitions.  Maura has extensive experience in assisting clients in developing and implementing antitrust compliance programs, including training of executives and employees.  Maura’s experience includes serving as second-chair trial counsel in a three-month antitrust trial  involving an alleged Sherman Act conspiracy.

In the labor and employment context, Maura’s experience includes obtaining summary judgment on behalf of employers in federal actions alleging employment discrimination on the basis of race. She has successfully defended an employer in a state court wrongful death action alleging negligence and intentional tort brought by the family of an employee killed on the job. Maura also negotiated a consent decree and settlement on behalf of an Ohio city accused of sexual harassment within a city department and assisted the city in instituting an investigation and disciplinary measures against responsible employees.

For several years, Maura has served on the Board of Trustees of the Art Therapy Studio in Cleveland, where she is Vice President of the Board.  Since 2008, she has been a Director of The Music Settlement in Cleveland.  Maura also currently serves as an officer of the Antitrust Section Council of the Ohio State Bar Association.

Maura served as a law clerk for U.S. District Court Judge Ann Aldrich of the Northern District of Ohio before joining Calfee in 1994.  In 1999, she was awarded a Pegasus Scholarship by the American Inns of Court and spent three months at the Inns of Court in London, England.  In 2002, Maura was named as a fellow of the Ohio State Bar Foundation.  Maura became a partner at Calfee in 2003.
