Laura McBride

Associate

LAURA assists publicly traded, privately held and government entities in a wide range of disputes and compliance matters.  Laura is a member of the firm’s Litigation group and is also active in the Health Care and Life Sciences, and Federal Government Contract and Agency Regulation groups.  In the corporate litigation context, Laura has experience in representing all sizes and types of business entities in contract and corporate governance disputes and tort defense.

In the health care arena, Laura has represented various types of entities in both litigation and regulatory matters.  Her most recent experience includes representing payors in defending claims by providers and beneficiaries.  She also has represented health care institutions in in-house investigations for federal/state compliance.  Laura’s unique background includes her experience as a Program Analyst in the Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services overseeing federal health programs, including those of the FDA and NIH.  Her primary focus was the conduct of clinical research and the system of human-subject protections, and the regulatory system for dietary supplements (which work led to Laura testifying before a House Subcommittee.)  Laura also holds a master’s degree in Evaluative Clinical Sciences, a program focused on health policy considerations of clinical outcomes. 

Laura’s federal work and representative experience also allow her to provide valuable work on behalf of clients in a variety of regulatory arenas, including the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, the Ohio Board of Tax Appeals, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.  Laura assists clients in developing strategies to resolve potential compliance questions and issues, and in representing parties in actions by or against government agencies. 

Laura serves on the Board of Directors for Baby-Friendly USA, Inc., which is the non-profit entity responsible for evaluating and certifying United States hospitals as meeting the standards set by UNICEF and the World Health Organization’s Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative for integrating successful breastfeeding practices.  Laura also serves on the Board of Directors for the Lakewood Community Services Center, which provides food and housing services to individuals and families in need on the west side of Cleveland, including a community garden for LCSC client-families.

She served as an intern in the legal department of a professional football club before joining Calfee in 2005.
