JAMES focuses his practice on counseling and litigating on behalf of insurance policyholders and banks. He also litigates general business disputes, with significant class action and real estate litigation experience. Additionally, he counsels corporate clients on designing and administering promotional sweepstakes.
James represents closely held and publicly traded business clients on a variety of matters. These include litigating contract, business tort, and equitable claims; advising on contract interpretation; and facilitating alternative dispute resolution efforts. He has litigated in many Ohio appeals and trial courts, as well as numerous federal trial courts, including the Northern District of Ohio, Eastern District of Michigan, Western District of Pennsylvania, Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Eastern District of Missouri, and Middle District of Florida.
James’s community involvement includes helping United Way of Greater Cleveland raise funds as a corporate solicitor for its 2010 annual campaign; representing numerous Legal Aid clients pro bono with consistently favorable outcomes; and mentoring high school students interested in pursuing careers in law. He also is an alumnus of the Cleveland Bridge Builders Flagship Program.
James joined Calfee in 2001 and became a partner effective January 1, 2010. He serves as a partner member of Calfee’s Associates Committee, is a member of the Litigation Practice Group Marketing Committee, and previously served on the firm’s Hiring Committee. He also serves as the mentor to one midlevel associate and one junior associate, and has twice served as a mentor to first-year lawyers in connection with the Ohio Supreme Court’s year-long Lawyer to Lawyer Mentoring Program.
