Fritz E. Berckmueller

FRITZ is a partner in the firm’s Litigation Group with a focus on securities and shareholder litigation, white collar criminal defense and internal corporate investigations.

He represents officers and directors in securities fraud class actions and shareholder derivative actions. He has conducted internal investigations for corporate clients and assisted individual employees being investigated by their corporate employers, and has assisted individuals and corporate clients in responding to DOJ, SEC and NYSE investigations, as well as state criminal inquiries. He has also defended individuals against federal criminal actions in courts across the country over charges of securities fraud, copyright infringement and theft of trade secrets.
 
Fritz also has years of experience representing businesses and business partners in state and federal courts in all manner of commercial disputes from claims of breach of contract, fraud and breach of duty to claims of tortious interference, misappropriation of trade secrets and civil conspiracy.
 
Fritz is a member of the American Bar Association (Criminal Justice Section and White Collar Crime Committee), the Federal Bar Association and the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association and has participated as a member of the William K. Thomas Inn of Court.  He is co-author of “Testing the Limits of NSMIA Preemption: State Authority to Determine the Validity of Covered Securities and to Regulate Disclosure,” The Business Lawyer, May 2008 and “The Benefits of Booker for Cooperating Defendants,” Business Crimes Bulletin, June 2005.
 
Fritz is active in the community, including with The Boy Scouts of America, the Community Council of his local school district, and the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland.
 
Formerly at Katten Muchin Rosenman in Chicago, Fritz joined Calfee in 2006.  He became a partner in 2010.
